The Detroit Outreach Admissions Office is a vital extension of the Office of Admissions. Its mission is to assist in the achievement of university enrollment goals by providing high-quality leadership, services and programs with a focus on southeast Michigan and Ohio in order to recruit, admit and enroll students whose experiences and talents demonstrate that they and Michigan State University will benefit by their enrollment.


Its primary role is to serve the southeast Michigan community in support of the Office of Admissions goals:

  • To enroll freshman and transfer classes that meet university enrollment goals
  • To increase the diversity of the enrolled freshman and transfer classes in terms of background, geographical origin, talents and experiences
  • To maintain or improve the academic quality of the freshman and transfer classes as evidenced by traditional measures
  • To improve and enhance service to prospective and admitted students and their families
  • To improve the quality, professionalism and outcomes of recruitment programs and communications
  • To increase communication and collaborative efforts among the Office of Admissions, other central units, the colleges, schools, and departments, the alumni, and the southeast Michigan community
  • To more strategically use existing and new recruitment and yield resources based on application and yield data and market research
  • To improve efficiency and effectiveness through continual evaluation of policies, processes and practices





John Ambrose, M.A., Associate Director for Inclusion and Strategic Planning

For more than 10 years John Ambrose has been involved in college admissions and student affairs-related activities. He previously worked as a successful sales representative in the printing and insurance industries.

At Michigan State University, Ambrose manages the recruitment activity for undergraduate admissions within the United States. This includes six regionally located representatives—New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Texas, Michigan (Upper Peninsula) and California—and one satellite office (MSU Detroit Center).

Last year, Michigan State University received more than 30,000 student applications and approximately 10-12% of those applications were handled by the MSU Detroit Center.

Brandon Scarber currently recruits students based on academics in the Metro Detroit area and the Downriver areas in southeast Michigan (Detroit, Inkster, Romulus, Wayne, Westland, Monroe, Trenton, and Rockwood). He has been working at MSU for five years.
